The localization movement, occurring all over the world, is gaining traction. The application of this movement will fundamentally change our society in a way that the elite class does not want.
Localization is interchangeable with Community Rewilding- these two disciplines go hand in hand and provide the same result- sovereignty for people.
Localization represents the greater thought culture in which Community Rewilding fits- the understanding that things aren’t working because our society is in need of systemic reform and adaptation. This is not a call to destroy our society and rebuild it- this is a call to get rid of the parts of our system that aren’t working for us by enhancing the parts that are.
Globalization, urbanization, corporatization, and technology, are perpetuated by corporate monopoly and government oligarchy. These influences have created a modern world that breeds disconnection, manipulates economics, degrades resources, and destroys individual autonomy and liberty.
The “progress” culture of the modern world is predicated on globalization and the ideology of globalism- macro systems that create economic interdependence, destruction and homogeny of culture, and use of resources worldwide. A connected world is not bad. Capitalism is not bad. It is the monopolizing, corruption, and abuse of these structures that is bad.
Globalism is the parent of our economy, geopolitical realities, and social norms. This worldview serves the interests of the few where the control and submission of the many is required for continued success.

We are kept comfortable with convenience, stupid with mindless entertainment, devoid of spirituality and meaning, dependent on gratifications, quiet by special interests, divided by political propaganda, and purposeless as our responsibility is removed from us.
If our world is set up as a global system, it automatically means that local interests- culture, economy, and natural resources-are disempowered and destroyed. Localization or localism is the anthesis of globalism and rectifies the imbalances it causes.
The localization movement is led by an organization called Local Futures. Local Futures shares “we are living through a crisis of disconnection – from nature, community, and the deeper meaning that makes life whole. Local Futures offers a path home. By restoring local economies and cultures, we regenerate the Earth and ourselves.” Localization is about “bringing the economy and social systems back to a human scale.” It does not remove the existing structures of our society- it simply makes it so that we have more control over them.
We are in a revolution. Modern influences have declared warfare on knowledge, localism, spirituality, health, and land. We are not fighting this modern revolution with weaponry on the battlefield- we are fighting it with our choices, life ways, and shared ideology. This moves us beyond protests and public opinion. Fostering our empowerment through living independent from modern influence is where we should put our energy.
Community Rewilding, Rewilding in total, provides us with the natural elements of the localization movement. Bringing us back to basics, connecting back to local land and its resources, choosing lifeways that restore nature and empower people, leading us to sovereignty.
What does this look like in practice? This means so many things. Homesteading and permaculture on your property. Community Gardens or Food Forests owned and operated by local people and community centers like a church, business, or school. Learning the language, food culture, and folklore of your ancestry. Reading and expanding knowledge on civics, liberty, and history. Reskilling by learning to make fire, hunt, fish, make clothes, build shelters, purify water, read maps, and more.

We have nothing to fear. We already have everything that we need to be successful. In a sea of ideas shared day to day, know that is this not an idea, it’s a promise. This is where we are going, understand now to be ready for the quickly coming future of our society.

Very true.
I have come to understand this breakdown of the structures of modernity as The Great Simplification, the term used by Nate Hagens.
You’re right. Rewilding has a place in this new civilization. Rewilding skills may be vital for personal and community survival. The breakdown has already begun in many places, as always with those most vulnerable and with the fewest resources. Our challenge is to help our communities survive by bending rather than breaking during the transition, while doing what we can to provide harm reduction to others.
Change is always difficult, but we must compost the elements of the current degenerating system in order to create the fertile ground for whatever comes next.

Good one Fran, I have been a big fan of Local Futures and Helena Norberg Hodge for many years. Things are likely to become more local whether we like it or not – it would be much better to prepare collectively and move in that direction in a controlled fashion. Local Futures provides a some good outlines of how we could be doing that.
