Stepping Back into the Sun

By: Anna Bergen, Outreach & Engagement Intern

After so many months of gray skies, heavy winter coats, and snowy grounds, spring has finally arrived. The days have become brighter, and there seems to be a sort of cheer in the air. If you’re anything like me, winter has put me into “hibernation mode” where I barely wanted to step out into the cold, chilly air. But as the weather began to shift, I felt this pull to step outside onto green grass and reconnect with the natural world.

This season in particular yearns for you to go on an outdoor adventure. If you are looking for something fun and simple, then go for a walk or run in one of NJ’s many local, county, or state parks. There are so many options, such as Allaire State Park, Island Beach State Park, and Branch Brook Park, all of which involve being in the great outdoors with some of their own special features. Each place carries its own magic from Allaire’s historic village, to Island Beach’s beautiful shoreline, to Branch Brook’s famous cherry blossoms. Go explore a local park you haven’t visited yet, and you might just stumble into the adventure of a lifetime.

For a more social spring activity, grab a friend, hit up your favorite local coffee shop, and head out for the farmers’ markets. There are a ton of amazing farmers’ markets located all over New Jersey that are just waiting for you to discover them. After the fun-filled day, take a stroll on the beach or along a riverbank to catch the sunset. Some other chill activities include walking through a botanical garden, participating in an outdoor yoga session, or taking a leisurely bike ride.

And of course, one cannot forget the small joys of spring:

  • Flying a kite at the beach
  • Growing a lush garden filled with herbs, vegetables, and flowers
  • Take a dip in the pond, ocean, lake, or stream (although it might still be a little chilly)
  • Go bird watching
  • Go foraging for wild edible plants
  • Explore a new town
  • Lay down a blanket and have a picnic
  • Walk barefoot in the grass
  • Catch golden hour
  • AND SO MUCH MORE!

So yes, Spring has officially sprung in New Jersey! So open the door, breathe in the fresh air, and let this season remind you how deeply we’re connected to the world around us.
